Hans Kelsen Pure Theory of Law Introduction Hans Kelsen was born in Prague on the 11th October 1881. Kelsen studied law in Vienna taking his doctorate in 1906 and later acted as a professor at the University of Vienna.

Because of his family's Jewish origins, Kelsen was forced to disrupt his career several times and move from country to country, but this enabled him to interact and associate with legal scholars from different parts of the world.
